If an Alarm Sounds Like an Emergency

Get everyone outside, stay outside and call 911 from a safe location. Do not pause to investigate, collect belongings or use a routine DoorLoop request. Follow firefighters’ instructions before re-entering.

Routine Resident Checklist

  • Learn the alarm locations and your household’s exit routes.
  • Use the alarm’s test button on the schedule stated by the manufacturer, lease or property instructions.
  • Report a missing, damaged, painted-over, loose or nonworking alarm promptly.
  • Keep vents clear and never cover, remove or disable an alarm.
  • If your lease assigns battery replacement to the resident, use the specified battery and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Report anything unclear.
  • Never remove a battery merely to silence an alarm without correcting and reporting the underlying problem.

What the Sound May Mean

Situation Response
Continuous or repeating emergency alarm, smoke or fire signs Evacuate and call 911
Periodic chirp or low-battery indication with no emergency signs Follow the device instructions and lease responsibility; report the issue if uncertain or unresolved
Alarm activates during cooking but there is no fire Address smoke safely and ventilate as appropriate; do not disable or relocate the alarm
Test button fails or device appears damaged Submit a prompt maintenance request with the alarm location and condition

Useful Maintenance Request

Include the room or hallway, alarm type if known, sound pattern, visible indicator, when it began, whether the test button works and a clear photo. Never test with flame, smoke or improvised methods.
